  1. Formatting Word-Processed Papers Manuscript Form

  2. Open a Word document. Go to File and Save As. Save the document on your i-drive, flash drive, or both. Title the document as specifically as possible, and place the document within a folder by class or topic.

  3. Select Times New Roman as the font, and then designate the font size as 12.

  4. On the Home tab, go next to the Paragraph area. In the bottom right-hand corner, click the arrow to change the settings for line spacing.

  5. Set the indentations to 0” Under Special, choose first line Choose 0.5” Set the line spacing to double. Set the spacings to 0”

  6. Click the insert tab at the top of the page. Click header. Choose the first option “blank header.” Click page number at the top left. Choose “Top of the Page,” and then scroll down to Plain number 3.

  7. Your header should look like this, with a 1 in the top right corner. Click just before the 1 and type your last name and a space. Your header needs to be formatted in the Times New Roman, font size 12. Click “close header and footer” at the top right. The header should then appear faded as you work with the rest of the document.

  8. Create a heading for your essay. At the top left, type the following: First Name Last Name Teacher Name English IV – Period Number Day Month Year Example: Lindsay Smith Mrs. Swets English 1301-3 5 September 2011

  9. Please note: Your heading, as well as the entire paper, should be double spaced. There is no need to insert extra spaces between the parts of the essay. Just hit enter after each line of the heading, after the title, and after each paragraph. Ever line of text should be uniformly distant from the next (double-spaced). If you’ve properly changed the paragraph settings, the computer will do the spacing for you.

  10. Center the title on the next line. • The title should: • Be in Times New Roman, font size 12 • Be in regular type, not bold • Be centered • Use capitals for the first letter of important words only

  11. On the next line, left align the first paragraph. The computer should automatically indent the paragraph five spaces. If not, change the paragraph settings or space over five. Compare the sample paper on the next page to your own. They should look exactly alike.
