  2. Fundamentals of IP Conferencing Presented by Dr. E. Brent Kelly Senior Analyst and Consultant Wainhouse Research bkelly@wainhouse.com

  3. The Internet Has Been An Anonymous Real Time Communication Medium everybody knows you’re IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  4. Top Down - Bottom Up Deployment • The Bottom Up – Top Down Paradox • Most IP videoconferencing implementations begin with at the grass roots • Successful implementation often needs upper management participation • Buy in by the IT group • QoS • Capital • Rationalization of business processes • Managers will want well conceived business cases IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  5. Elements of Successful Implementation Planning • Map Existing Network topology • Layers • Devices • Gateways • Firewalls • Servers LAN WAN IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  6. Implementation Planning • Superimpose videoconferencing devices on the topology map LAN Endpoint Gatekeeper MCU WAN MCU Gatekeeper Gateway Endpoints IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  7. Implementation Planning • Analyze each network segment to establish a baseline for • Average available bandwidth • Peak or burst bandwidth available • Switch/router issues that may affect performance • Buffers, memory, CPU, etc. • Existing QoS functionality • Backup power capability • Scalability for increased traffic IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  8. Implementation Planning • Caution: SNMP bandwidth monitor peak bandwidth utilization is not accurate SNMP Resource Utilization Graph Threshold Actual Burst Rate SNMP Values Returned Time Collection Intervals Protocol analyzers show peak values often exceed threshold values by 40% during SNMP rate intervals! IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  9. Implementation Planning • Analyze Routers and Switches • Should be done by a network expert • Collect CPU and memory utilization • Analyze back plane utilization, queue depth, buffer failure • These devices may need upgrading to provide adequate QoS! IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  10. Implementation Planning 192.201.125.47 192.201.126.38 • IP Address Plan • Each new IP videoconferencing device will require an IP address • Static or dynamic? • Internet routable or not? • Consider network routes to other videoconferencing users • Look at number of videoconferencing users on each subnet and avoid congestion • Are redundant paths required in the event of a segment failure? IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  11. Implementation Planning • Existing videoconferencing equipment • If your company has ISDN videoconferencing systems, work them into the implementation plan • They can be used with IP – ISDN gateways • At least one company makes a small gateway designed for a single ISDN system IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  12. Implementation Planning • Preparing the Dialing Plan • The dialing plan directly impacts gatekeeper, MCUs, and gateways • How many digits will be used for local dialing • What prefix will be used for each remote location • What will gatekeeper topology look like • What multipoint conferences will be established and what are their prefixes • What gateway services will be established for connecting to ISDN and PSTN networks and what service prefixes will they use IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  13. Four-Phased Implementation Approach • Make the specification as quantitative as possible • Develop a test plan that will test every aspect of the phase specification plan • Obtain critical mass • Deploy enough systems to make them easily available • Consider making some “kiosk systems” • Establish clear criteria for success IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  14. Phase 1 - Enterprise LAN Corp Headquarters LAN MCU • Components • Endpoints • Gatekeeper • MCU • Video network software • Scheduling software H.323 Standalone Endpoint H.323 Desktop Endpoint H.323 Standalone Endpoint Gatekeeper IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  15. Phase 1 – Enterprise LAN • Phase 1 Goal: To Understand • QoS over the LAN • Gatekeeper functionality and dialing • MCU functionality and services • Endpoint interaction with gatekeeper, MCU, and each other • How to make point-to-point calls and MCU calls • How the video network management system works • How the scheduling system works IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  16. Phase 2 – LAN to LAN over WAN Corp Headquarters LAN MCU MCU Remote Site H.323 Desktop Endpoint • Add remote components • Endpoints • Gatekeeper • MCU Wide Area Network MCU H.323 Standalone Endpoint H.323 Standalone Endpoint H.323 Standalone Endpoint H.323 Desktop Endpoint Gatekeeper H.323 Standalone Endpoint Gatekeeper IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  17. Phase 2 – LAN to LAN over WAN • Phase 2 Goal: To Understand • QoS over the wide area network or overlay network • Gatekeeper zones and how to dial between them • MCU – MCU call setup and how to minimize WAN bandwidth requirements IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  18. Switched Circuit Network H.320 mode Phase 3 – Gateway Capability Corp Headquarters LAN MCU MCU Remote Site H.323 Desktop Endpoint Wide Area Network MCU • Add ISDN and PSTN calling capability H.323 Standalone Endpoint H.323 Standalone Endpoint H.323 Standalone Endpoint Voice only (analog) H.323 Desktop Endpoint Gatekeeper H.320 MCU H.323 Standalone Endpoint External Customers, Vendors, Remote Offices PSTN/H.320 Gateway Gatekeeper IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  19. Phase 3 – Gateway Capability • Phase 3 Goal: To Understand • How to set up gateway services and register them with the gatekeeper • How to dial out to ISDN system and how they can dial in • How to include telephone-only participants in video meetings • How to utilize gatekeeper least-cost-routing and alternative routing capabilities IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland
