  1. Welcome to the MODIS Land Collection 5 / Long Term Data Record WorkshopChris Justice MODIS Land Discipline Lead

  2. Moderate Resolution LAND Data • NASA developing Earth Science Data Records (Science Quality Data) in support of its science program • Science data sets need to be reprocessed as algorithms / instrument calibration improve (different from operational EDR’s) • MODIS has three Land Product Suites: Radiation Balance, Vegetation, Land Cover – standard products phased in • MODIS on its 4th reprocessing (Collection 5) • Changes made based on algorithm refinements (QA, Validation, User Feedback) planning started 2004 • Major effort on testing products and dependencies • Production system MODAPS augmented with a Land test system, • Collection 6 now being discussed for 2009 timeframe - will be seeking community input on necessary changes • NASA Moving from Missions to Measurements • Creating Land Measurement Teams (slowly) • ESDR White Papers generated - initial step in defining some of the land measurement suites (download via the NASA LCLUC Web Site) – community feedback is being sought

  3. One type of NASA ESDR are Long Term Data Records – sometimes called Climate Data Records (CDR’s) – needed for studying long term trends and change • Moderate Resolution record AVHRR>MODIS>VIIRS (other observations might include VGT, SeaWiFS) • A data ‘pathfinding’ project funded under the NASA REASON CAN program (Masuoka, Vermote et al.) – building on the Pathfinder 2 (AVHRR) and MODIS processing experience • This Workshop is an opportunity to present and discuss recent developments in both • An initiative from the emerging Moderate Resolution Land Group (Masuoka et al.) • Aimed at informing users of changes and recent project developments and soliciting feedback • Future of the current MODIS and VIIRS Land Teams uncertain – good news team leader budget secure • Current Funding starts to expire in March – bridging funds ? • Recompete in process – results by early summer • Hopeful that products will be continued (TBD)

  4. C5 Meeting Format MODIS Collection 5 Session (1.5 days) • Overview, Production Status, Schedule • Individual Product Changes (10 mins) by • Radiation Budget Product Suite • Vegetation Product Suite • Land Cover Product Suite • each Suite followed by Question and Answer Session (Save Questions) • Crosscutting Issues (QA, Validation) • Archive and Distribution Session • DAAC summaries • Question and Answer Session • Ordering and Data Tools • Breakout Groups (User Feedback, Needs and Discussion) by • Radiation Budget Product Suite • Vegetation Product Suite • Land Cover Product Suite • Wrap Up - Report Back from Breakouts and Conclusions Land LTDR Workshop AVHRR > MODIS > VIIRS ( .5days – Thurs pm ) • Presentations, Related Activities and User Feedback
