  1. KHON KAEN UNIVERSITY NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH AND DEBELOPMENT GROUP Khonkaen University (KKU) is already one of the top ten research universities in Thailand and has achieved consistently high scores for its teaching and learning activities. The establishment of the Neuroscience Research and Development Group at KKU in 2008 by Professor SuthipunJitpimolmard enabled the enthusiastic, community-endorsed adoption of a thematic, program based approach to neuroscience research. It brings together professionals from various disciplines, including Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Engineering and Education, in order to help find better treatments of prevention for a number of neurological conditions. In the first year, the 80 members of the Neuroscience Research and Development Group have research grants totaling Baht 1 M that support 12 members and 27 Master and PhD students. The key research interests of the group members of the Neuroscience Research and Development Group are; 1. Botulinum toxin research 2. Development of nutraceutical compounds and Brain Plasticity 3. Genetic research for detecting a susceptibility to carbamazepine-induced cutaneous adverse drug reactions in Thai patients.

It has become the first medical institution in Thailand to start the Clinical research and service on Botulinum toxin with patients. The team has persistently produced life-changing results for patients with neurological disorders and has annually published in the international renowned peer-reviewed journals.

  4. HEALTH AND NEUROPROECTIVE PRODUCT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Cognitive enhancement and neuroprotective effects of various indigenous Thai herbal plants have become an interesting topic in Neuroscience recently. Dr JintanapornWattanathorn and her team from the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine has pioneered in the field of development and research of health and brain enhancing products and has several of the developed products’ patent registered in 2010 Moreover the group has offered a post graduated Neuroscience program since 2005. The main objective of the program is to provide up-to-date training and opportunities of contemporary research in basic, applied and clinical Neurosciences. The students have consistently won numerous awards from abroad. Figure 4 A study of the effect of Kaempferiaparviflora extract to the body weight change

GENETIC RESEARCH FOR DETECTING A SUSEPTIBILITY TO CARBAMAZEPINE-INDUCED DRUG REACTION IN THAI PATIENTS The anticonvulsant car bamazepine (CBZ) frequetly causes various forms of skin drug reactions. We are among the first medical team in the country to report that the most sever form of CBZ drug in duce reaction, Steven Johnson syndrome, is strongly associated with the HLA-B*1502 gene in ethnic Thai population. This very important finding has therefore help saving lives of many patients with chronic neurological conditions who have to take this medication on a regular basis.
