  2. Introduction • Attention Spans are always relevant in the college atmosphere • “Top-of-Hour Break Renews Attention Span- first article read • “Effect of Instructional Pace on Student Attentiveness”- second article • Both helped to develop question I wanted to answer and behaviors to observe

  3. Methodology • Observational Study • Observed 6 Classes • 3 were devoted to opening 20 minutes of class time • 3 were devoted to observing a second 20 minute section of class time • Total of 12 undergrad students chosen at random were observed.

Results • Total number of Attentive Behaviors Decreased in the 2nd 20 minutes of class time, when comparing to 1st 20 minutes • Total number of Inattentive Behaviors Increased greatly in the 2nd 20 minutes of class when comparing to 1st 20 minutes • Study showed attentions begin to wane after first 20-25 minutes of class time

  8. Discussion • Observed 2 different professors, but multiple students. • Classes observed between Nov. 29 & Dec. 8th, (close to end of semester) • Only one observer/researcher • Follow up study, b/c the #s did show a trend in attention spans decreasing after first 20 minutes

  9. Other Issues • 1 student left to get a snack • Bomb Threat at end of observing • Students were presenting papers • Watching Films • Students talking to researcher about what I was doing • Unexpected attendance, lower than normal • Seeing unexpected behavior in a class
