Religion of Islam. Mairead Scanlon. Origins. Beginning in present day Saudi Arabia, revelations were sent from their God, Allah, to Muhammad. It took place in the city of Mecca. It is believed the message was passed through the angel Gabriel. The Qur’an was formed due to the revelations.

  2. Origins • Beginning in present day Saudi Arabia, revelations were sent from their God, Allah, to Muhammad. • It took place in the city of Mecca. • It is believed the message was passed through the angel Gabriel. The Qur’an was formed due to the revelations. • Believed he was last prophet

  3. Doctrines and Teachings • The five pillars of Islam are the basis of their religion. They include: Prayer, Pilgrimage, Fasting, Almsgiving, and Faith. • Pilgrimage to Mecca is encouraged to happen at least one time throughout life • Almsgiving is to help out the less fortunate (was done through tax) • They pray 5 times a day and must face Mecca- call to prayer is the reminder it is time • Belief in one God, Allah • Fasting is important especially during Ramadan • The Qur’an tells the revelations sent to Muhammad from Allah • Judgment day- where God determines your afterlife • They don’t worship anything or anyone except Allah • Diligent in maintaining religion and accomplishing goals

Dissemination • Convert nonbelievers • Expanded under control of four caliphs- (a successor) • Spread East and into Africa • Tax was placed on all nonbelievers which encouraged them to convert Shia vs. Sunni • Shia believe Ali and his direct descendants should be the successors of Muhammad • Sunni (most people) believe the first four caliphs were the successors of Muhammad, and if you were a close friend or knowledgeable, then you fit the job.

Turning Points • The Qur’an has stayed the same all throughout history where as the Bible has been continuously changed • More than one turning point • Hijrah led to political and religious unification • 9/11 was a turning point for Muslims in America • Not able to worship as freely and are watched more carefully • Controversy over whether or not a mosque should be built near Ground Zero

  6. Absorption • Trade and Finance expanded • Enforces the view that men are superior but also has laws concerning women that vary from region to region • Challenges arose as modern day issues were trying to be dealt with using pre-modern beliefs.

  7. Modern Connections • Second largest religion in the world (Christianity is first) • The number of people of Muslim religion in 2012 is 1.2 billion and is increasing • Indonesia is the country with the largest population of Muslims • After 9/11 many Americans began to take their anger out on Muslims • Art and architecture include the Mosque and Elements from Byzantine Empire Islam population in the 2000
