  6. Hebrew – Old Testament • שָׁלֹום(šā∙lôm)peace • prosperity, i.e., an intact state of favorable circumstance (1 Sam. 1: 17) • completeness, i.e., the state of a totality of a collection (Jer. 13: 19) • safeness, salvation, i.e., a state of being free from danger (Gen. 28: 21) • health, i.e., a state of lack of disease and a wholeness or well-being (Ps. 38:4) • satisfaction, contentment, i.e., the state of having one’s basic needs or more being met and so being content (Ex. 18: 23) • blessing, i.e., the content of the act of giving kindness to another (Jer. 16: 5)

  7. Greek – New Testament • εἰρήνη (eirēnē) • peace, harmony, tranquility; in certain contexts seen in the Old Testament concept of the Shalom; • welfare, health (Mt 10:34; Mk 5:34; Jn 14:27; 16:33; 20:19, 21; Ro 1:7; 5:1; 15:33; Gal 5:22; Eph 2:14; Php 4:7, 9; Col 3:15; Ro 10:15); • freedom from worry (Gal 5:22)

  8. English Word Peace • PEACE, n. [L. pax, paco, to appease.] • To be at peace, to be reconciled; to live in harmony. • Heavenly rest; the happiness of heaven. • Public tranquility; that quiet, order and security which is guaranteed by the laws. Webster’s 1828

  9. The Christian Concept • Look up the following passages • Set # 1: Ephesians 2: 14; 1 Corinthians 7: 15 • Set # 2: Matthew 5: 9 Romans 5: 1 • What do these reveal about the concept of peace?

  10. Western Mistake • Bring own understanding of peace to the discussion, either: • Biblical – Shalom • Secular – no evil; man basically good • Different understandings of the same word “peace”

  11. The Muslim – Arabic – Salaam • The Arabic term Islam (إسلام) is derived from aslama, which means “to surrender” or “resign oneself”. • The word salaam (سلام) (“peace”) shares the same abstract root with the word Islam. • This has led to a widespread misinterpretation that the word Islam means peace.
