  2. Question What solvents remove ink?

  3. PURPOSE The purpose of this project is to determine what chemicals will take ink out of cloth. It is important because if you drop an ink pen and it stains your clothing and you can’t get it out.

  4. hypothesize We hypothesize that hairspray will remove ink from clothing the best. We believe this because one of our teammates mom tried it out and said it worked.

  5. PROCEDURE

  6. Materials Quarter 4 cups Water 625 mL Vinegar 625mL Detergent 625mL Alcohol 625mL Labels Markers

  7. Manipulated/independent : different solvent Responding/dependent : how much ink is removed Variables

  8. 1 Trace a quarter on 5 cloth squares. 2 Color in the circle with ink. 3 Fill a cup with 125 mL of water label cup. 4 Fill a cup with 125 mL of vinegar label cup. 5 Fill a cup with 125 mL of Wisk detergent . Directions

  9. Directions 6 Fill a cup with 125 mL of alcohol. Label cup. • Place one cloth square in each cup. • Soak cloth 24 hours. • Remove cloth from cup. Rate amount of ink removed using the rating scale 0 to 10 with ten being all ink removed and zero being no ink removed . • 11 Repeat steps I through 10 for four more trials.

  10. First Trial

  11. Our hypothesis was incorrect . Water worked the best to take ink out of cloth. Water averaged 6.2, detergent average d2.8, alcohol averaged4.4, and hair spray averaged .3. If we did this again, instead of just putting the wet ink cloth right in, we would put it in dry and still wait for 24 hours. Conclusion
