  4.  Your task • Read p.174-6 and list the reasons for the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Reasons for Fall of Berlin Wall • 1989 was a key year – 40 years since formation of DDR (East Germany) • DDR product of Cold War tensions, when these ceased to exist so did the need for DDR • Fugitives – Hungary opened its borders to West in autumn 1989 • Political organisations, e.g. ‘New Forum’ • Honecker lost control over East German Politburo • Actions of Kohl & Gorbachev

End of USSR • 1991, START talks signalled end to East-West hostilities • Failure of Gorbachev’s domestic reforms, e.g. food queues, industrial action, inflation, crime • Glasnost – Russians more openly critical • Damaging revelations about Communist Party – mass graves, corruption • New political organisations – Democratic Reform Movement • Collapse of central control

  12.  Extension • Read John Lewis Gaddis, p.239-257 and note down evidence to suggest the end of Communism was brought about by Gorbachev, popular pressure or other factors
