This unit is going to introduce you to “offspring traits”. • Here are some things you will learn in this unit. • The difference between sexual and asexual reproduction. • How traits help certain organisms survive. • The difference between inherited and acquired traits. • How traits are passed from parents and inherited by offspring. On the following slides pay attention to all BOLDEDwords. Those will be the primary vocabulary words for this unit.

  5. Genetics http://youtu.be/V9BZ3zx8b8I • the branch of biology concerned with heredity. • DNA- (deoxyribonucleic acid) Heredity material in almost all organisms. • Chromosomes- Threadlike structures that DNA molecules are packaged into. • Gene-genetic material on a chromosome that code for a trait. (gene for eye color) • Alleles-Different forms of a gene. (Flavors of traits)

Heredity • Passing of traits from parents to offspring. • Inheritance- the traits obtained (inherited) from your parents. • Trait- a distinguishing characteristic or quality. • 2 Types: • Inherited Traits-traits passed from parents to offspring. • Acquired Traits-trait that is developed (not born with).

  7. Reproduction • the production of offspring by sexual or asexual processes. • 2 Types: • Asexual Reproduction- A reproductive process that involves only one parent and produces offspring that are identical to the parent. • Sexual Reproduction- A reproductive process that involves two parents that combine their genetic material to produce a new organism, which differs from both parents.
