Presentation Transcript

  1. Phase Changes • Matter changes state by the addition or removal of energy in the form of heat. • Two forms of heat

  2. Sensible Heat • Heat added to or released from a single phase • Increases or decreases speed (kinetic energy) of particles • Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles

  3. Latent Heat • Heat added or released during a phase change • Cannot be sensed - hidden • Absorbed/released by the particles during the phase change

  4. What are the names of the phase changes? GAS LIQUID SOLID

  5. Phase Changes GAS sublimation deposition vaporization condensation LIQUID melting freezing SOLID

  6. Phase Changes • Some phase changes require heat to be added to the matter • Endothermic Heat

  7. Which phase changes are endothermic? GAS sublimation deposition vaporization condensation LIQUID melting freezing SOLID

  8. Endothermic phase changes GAS sublimation vaporization LIQUID melting SOLID

  9. Phase Changes • Some phase changes require heat to be removed from the matter • Exothermic Heat

  10. Which phase changes are exothermic? GAS sublimation deposition vaporization condensation LIQUID melting freezing SOLID

  11. Exothermic Phase Changes GAS deposition condensation LIQUID freezing SOLID

  12. Phase Changes • The temperature at which phase changes occur is a unique property of each type of matter • Melting point • Boiling point • “Normal” values measured at 1 atm
