4. Important Information • Attendance: when your child is absent for any reason, please send in a signed note that includes the reason for absence along with the date your child missed. If a note/attendance slip is not brought back within 3 days of your child’s return to school it will be marked as an unexcused absence. If you build up unexcused absences you may be fined by the state. • Transportation - Please send in a written note if your child has a change of transportation for the end of the day. • 3. Front doors: For your child’s safety our doors are locked. 4. Continuing to go green- We will email as much as we can to you. If you would prefer us to send a paper copy please send in a hand written note.

10. Social Studies In 4th grade our focus is on Pennsylvania. A large portion of our social studies program is based on the realistic fiction book, Tales of the Towpath. This program is sponsored by the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor They have supplied a treasure chest full of artifacts to aide in the study of our state’s history.

12. Adjustments / Connections Across Content • Due to the pilot of Tales of the Towpath in social studies, we will complete all 4 science kits in the first 2 marking periods. This allows us to keep the artifacts from the museum for the 3rd and 4th marking periods. • This will affect the standards that will be monitored on your students report cards when compared to previous years. No worries! We will all cover the same objectives, just in a slightly different order to maximize our learning opportunities.

17. More Math • Triangles are 3 sided polygons. • These triangles are different sizes so they are not congruent! • They each have 2 equal sides so they are isosceles.

22. Homework Assignments • Students will get homework just about every day. • They should write it in their homework books to be checked each night. • If students ever have a great deal of difficulty with an assignment, please write a note to me so I am aware that they are struggling. Thank you!

23. Lunch Time • Lunch is 12:00 – 12:30. • Please send lunch money in an envelope with your child’s name and number in order to have money credited to your account.

25. Recess12:45 – 1:10 PM • No toys from home are allowed at school. • Parents are not allowed out on the playground due to insurance purposes.

Reading 1:10 – 2:30 • Reading is a life-long skill that will help us to succeed at many things. • Journeys is the source for our shared reading, guided reading, spelling, vocabulary development and grammar. More Reading • Small groups help to give children individualized instruction. • Students proceed through books that have been leveled so that they are working at books just right for them. • Students have opportunities to buddy read. They can discuss what they are reading with their buddies. • Expected Level of Success for 4th grade students begins at O and goes through R.

30. Reading Goal Our reading goal is: • 25 Books at our level • This year we are counting pages - 120 pages will count for one book. • Students should read 20 minutes at home every night!

Spelling– filtered into reading time depending on needs of the students. • Our spelling program emphasizes word structure, analysis and phonics. • Practice with words helps to develop vocabulary and writing skills. • Some students will be working independently with words during the week, while others will be working with an adult.

Spelling City • Students will have opportunity to complete spelling homework online. • Students should check their homepage for assignments each week. • Students unable to get online will be given the more traditional paper homework or given time to work at school during Power Time. www.spellingcity.com

43. More Information Birthdays- Birthday treats are welcome. We normally pass treats out at the beginning of the day and sing Happy Birthday! Students have the choice of eating them then or later during the day. Please do not send treats that have any kind of nuts in them. We have a student with a nut allergy and we would like everyone to stay healthy! Thank you.

44. Monitoring Progress • Students will keep track of their own progress using a tracking sheet for each subject area. They will periodically take it home to share with you. • Report cards will be sent home at the end of each marking period. • Check the Parent Portal online to see how your child is progressing. Ask if you need help. • Standards based grading will be used to show you the level which your child has achieved. • They will be graded using rubric scores of 4, 3, 2, and 1.
