  1. WHAT ABOUT BAPTISM? Why do we need to study it? Why do we need to tell others about it.?

  2. WHAT IS BAPTISM? • A “burial” or “immersion” in water • Rom. 6:3-4 “…therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death,…” • Col. 2:11-13 “…by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism.” • Acts 8:38-39 “…And both Phillip and the eunuch went down into the water and he baptized him.”

  3. How Many Baptisms Are There? • Baptism of the Holy Spirit – Acts 2:17-21 • Baptism of John – Matt. 3:1-6 • Baptism of the great commission – Matt 28:18-20; Mk. 16:15-16

  4. Baptism of the Holy SpiritActs 2:17-21 • Used to give special miraculous powers to the apostles • These powers were used to confirm that what was being taught was from God • These powers ceased when the Bible was completed

  5. Baptism of John Matt. 3:1-6 • Used by John the Baptist in order to prepare the nations for the coming of the Messiah • Was replaced by baptism instituted by Christ in the great commission • Some were re-baptized who had been under the baptism of John – Acts 19:1-5

  6. Baptism Of The Great Commission- Acts 2:38 • Instituted by Christ • Taught by the disciples • Was required of everyone desiring to become Christians and to go to heaven • Required of us today

  7. Why Should Everyone Be Baptized? • Because God commanded it • How did He command it?

  8. Through The Great Commission • Matt. 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,…” • Mk. 16:15-16 “Go into all the world and teach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved;…”

  9. Through The Testimony of Spirit Inspired men • Peter – on Pentecost “Then Peter said to them ‘Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ…” • Ananias – to Saul “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.”

  10. Through Divinely Approved Examples • Peter – Cornelius – Acts 10:47-48 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the gift of the Holy Spirit, just as we have? • Phillip – the eunuch – Acts 8:36-38 “And both Phillip and the eunuch went down into the water and he baptized him.”

  11. Paul – the Philippian jailer – Acts 16:33 “And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes, and immediately he and all his family were baptized.” • Lydia – Acts 16:11-15 “…and when she and her household were baptized.”

  12. The Results of Baptism • Allows us entrance to God’s kingdom – the church • Jno. 3:1-5 Christ told Nicodemus that he must be born again in order to see the kingdom of God. • Acts 2:47 God added to the church daily those who were being saved.

  13. Baptism is the means of our getting into Christ. Gal 3:27 “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” I Cor. 12:13 “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body – whether Jew or Greek, whether slaves or free, and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.” Rom. 6:3 “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ were baptized into His death.”

  14. Our sins are remitted when we are baptized. Lk. 24:47 “…and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” Acts 22:16 “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said to them, ‘Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

  15. What About Baptism? • Have you been baptized? • Have you had your sins remitted? • Have you been united with Christ? • Have you been added to Christ’s church? • Are you on your way to heaven? • What is your condition tonight?
