Projectile Motion

9.1 Projectile motion (AHL)

9.1.1 State the independence of the vertical and the horizontal components of velocity for a projectile in a uniform field.

9.1.2 Describe and sketch the trajectory of projectile motion as parabolic in the absence of air resistance.

9.1.3 Describe qualitatively the effect of air resistance on the trajectory of a projectile.

9.1.4 Solve problems on projectile motion.

In projectile motion, the motion is in two dimensions, so we resolve the motion in two components: vertical and horizontal.

With these basic ideas we can derive equations for horizontal and vertical motion using the four basic kinematics equations.

Remember,

Horizontal motion means constant velocity (zero acceleration).

Vertical motion means constant acceleration (a = g).

So far we have looked at projectile motion without air resistance.

Sketch the trajectory of a golf ball including the air resistance.
