This report presents the findings of the 2011 Point-in-Time Survey conducted in Cape May County, NJ, highlighting the demographics, causes, and service needs of the homeless population. It also explores the impact of the recession on homelessness in the region.

  2. Total Surveyed: 286Total Homeless: 25212 of those were “chronically homeless” and86 of those were families. Q: In which county was your last permanent address? 90% last resided in Cape May County

  3. Causes of Homelessness • 82 (82%) of those leaving incarceration were discharged into homelessness; • 47 (63%) of hospitalized people were discharged into homelessness; • and 24 (80%) of those who received inpatient services were discharged into homelessness. Total Homeless Population: 252

  7. Duration without Permanent Housing • 23% of the homeless population has reported living without a permanent address at least 4 times within the last 3 years. • 13% has reported living without a permanent address for more than 1 year.

  10. Other Facts about Cape May County Homelessness • 79 children ages 6 and younger are homeless. • 81 children ages 7-17 are homeless. • 66% of the homeless are individuals and 34% are families.

  11. Additional Facts About Families Experiencing Homelessness • The number of homeless families more than doubled from 40 to 86 from 2008 to 2011. • Domestic violence increasingly plays a role in family homelessness in Cape May County. In 2008, 10% of homeless families reported domestic violence as the cause of their homelessness while 35% of households reported that in 2011.

  12. What Impact Has the Recession Had on the Homeless? • In 2008, 23% of people who were homeless reported that the cause was eviction. That percentage increased to 37% in 2011. • Individuals who were homeless consistently reported over the past 4 years that they were experiencing homelessness due to a job loss or the inability to find work. The high cost of housing remained another top reason.
