  9. Why Teach Principles of Technology?

  10. Because Mechanical Systems Fluid Systems Electrical Systems Thermal Systems are used in everything we buy, use, produce, and manufacture

  11. Understanding the Principles of Technology Helps Students Become: • More Informed consumers • Better decision makers about issues related to technology • MORE EMPLOYABLE

  12. Principles of Technology is designed for the student who would not take a traditional physics class. Historically 80% of all graduating seniors did not complete a traditional physics class.

  13. Principles of Technology I meets the graduation requirement credit for Physics in both the Recommended & Distinguished Achievement Programs

  14. TAKS Oriented • Based on the TEKS for Physics • Enhances students’ math skills • Re-enforces Algebra TEKS • Stresses writing skills • Improves TAKS scores

  15. Activity Focused • Uses the tools and equipment found in today’s jobs

  16. Emphasizes: • Problem Solving • Decision making • Real life applications • Teamwork • Work related concepts and skills

  17. Schools generate Career and Technology funding for teaching Principles of Technology

  18. Principles of Technology is approved for statewide articulated credit

  19. The Main Reason to Teach Principles of Technology is…

  20. Because the Knowledge and Skills Learned are Relevant to: • The Products we use • And the Higher Paying Jobs our Students seek

  21. Which Equals =

  22. Student Success

  23. How Much does Principles of Technology Cost?

  24. Classrooms Because of the new Texas High School graduation requirements more students than ever will taking science lab classes. School Districts must meet this increasing demand. Any classroom that has access to 115 volt electrical power, water, drain, and compressed air (portable air compressor) can be used. The room does not have to be a traditional science lab classroom.

  25. Teachers More teachers are needed to meet the demand. Physics and Chemistry teachers are difficult to find. Principles of Technology may be taught by technology education teachers, physics teachers, or science teachers that have a science composite, once they have completed the state approved Principles of Technology workshop.

  26. Curriculum Development No Cost. The Principles of Technology curriculum was developed through the cooperative activity of 45 state and provincial education agencies in association with the Agency for Industrial Technology (AIT) and the Center for Occupational Research and Development (CORD).

  27. Approximate* Cost of Setting Up a Lab for 24 Students • Equipment, Instruments, and Accessories $ 41,000 • Lab Benches, Tops and Tray Assemblies 11,500 • Textbooks and software 1,600 • Lab manuals and student journals 500 • Installation and Freight 7,000 ______ Total $ 61,600 * Costs can vary greatly depending upon existing equipment you have.

  28. Putting the Cost into Perspective • We have to provide more lab oriented classes. • Students learn best when what they are learning is relevant to their needs. • Finally, the cost of setting up a classroom with the equipment, furnishings, and learning materials for teaching potentially 192 students per semester is less than the cost of a new school bus.
