  2. The Liberty Bell has rung many times. However most people only know about one, very famous ring. This time was the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. The Liberty Bell didn’t ring for just one reason It was rung to call the assembly together and to summon people together for special announcements and events The Bell Rings

  3. The Bell’s History • On July 8, 1776 the Bell rang out from Independence Hall summoning Citizens to hear the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon. • Also, on June 6, 1944 the Bell’s sound was broadcasted throughout the country

  4. Words on the Bell • On the Bell it says PASS AND STOW PHILADA MDCCLIII • Inscribed on the Bell are the words “ By order of the Assembly of the Province of Pensylvania for the State House in Philada.” Notice that the word Pennsylvania was spelled Pensylvania

  5. The Materials • Copper, Tin, Lead, Zinc and Iron • Silver, Antimony, Arsenic, Gold and Nickel • When John Pass and John Stow remade the bell, they added 1.5 ounces of copper for every 1 pound of the old bell

  6. Crack!!! • There are many different stories and theories about the Crack and how it came to be • Though it is agreed that the final expansion of the crack was on Washington's birthday in 1846 • This last expansion caused the bell to become unringable • The Crack is 12in. To 15in. long

  7. Unusual Facts about the Bell • The Bell was cracked the first time it was rung • The note of the bell is E-flat • The Bell weighed 2080 pounds when it was first cast

  8. The Bell as an Icon • The Liberty Bell was given it’s iconic status in 1837 • This is when abolitionists adopted the Bell as a symbol for their movement • The Bell was first used in this association as a frontispiece to an edition of Liberty, a New York anti-slavery Society • Today the Liberty Bell is at the State House in Pennsylvania
