  3. The Declaration of Independence A document explaining to the world why the colonies were breaking away from Great Britain. Thomas Jefferson wrote it Representatives from all 13 colonies signed it. July 4, 1776 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania George Walton, Lyman Hall, Button Gwinnett Georgians signed it

  5. Part I - Preamble • States that the colonies are going to separate from Britain. • Letter to the world explaining why the colonies are going to declare independence from Britain.

  6. Part II – Statement of Human Rights • Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness God gives these inalienable rights which means no one or no government can take them away. • Governments get their power from the governed.

  7. Part II – Statement of Human Rights • It is the responsibility of governments to protect these rights. • When the government does not protect the rights of the people it is their duty to change that government.

  8. Part III – Grievances against King George III • Complaints against George III and the English government. • Based on taxes and other unfair laws passed by Parliament.

  9. Part IV – Independence declared and pact made • “We pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.” • The signers were committing an act of treason and if caught would lose their lives, fortunes, and honor.
