Background • Shortage of technical services professionals/catalogers. • Need to catalog backlog materials. • Desire for more complete records in OPAC and improved patron access.
856 Field Project • 1,028 records in OPAC contain an 856 field. • PS librarian is responsible for weekly check and fix of links. • Modifies or deletes 2-5 links weekly.
Needs Assessment • Public Services increases number of cataloging requests. • Database clean-up after migration is a priority. • Specific formats or library collections need cataloging. • Shortage of Technical Services personnel.
Table of Contents Added, 2000-Current Before the TOC project, a keyword search for Kate Chopin found 17 books, after, the same search returns 41 books.
Identify: • Administrative and collegial support. • Public Services staff with interest and willingness to learn new skills. • Parameters of the proposed projects.
Media Backlog Project • 2,000 items are in Media Backlog in 1997. • No TS staff available to catalog materials. • PS librarian (responsible for collection) offers to learn copy cataloging.
1998, Guidelines are developed for cataloging videos, puppets, cd’s, big books, kits, scores, and realia. • By Dec. 1999, all the backlog is cataloged. • Circulation for Media Collection jumps over 200 percent in two years as students can now find these materials in the OPAC.

Planning • Match existing talents and skills. • Identify cataloging tools needed. • Develop cataloging training procedures. • Divide project into manageable components.

Outcomes: • Improves interdepartmental communication. • Increases access to materials. • Increases circulation of materials. • Encourages additional collaborative projects.
