  4. Sherman’s march… The Confederates could no longer keep up. Total War: Systematic destruction of an entire land- not just an army

  5. End of War April 8th, 1865 • Lee finds himself surrounded by Union Soldiers on all fronts • Realization the Southern cause was hopeless • Lee would have to surrender because… • Running out of men & supplies • Union captured Richmond

  6. Appomattox Court House Appomattox Court House - April 9th, 1865 – Louis Guillaume 1867 National Historic Park US Dept. Of Interior Almost four years after the fall of Fort Sumter, the Civil War came to an end. Lee surrenders to Grant on April 9, 1865

  11. Lincoln is Assassinated!!! • Booth believed Lincoln was waging war on Southern Rights
