  8. Parable of the Builders • Just a simple story with an obvious moral? • Song based on Matthew’s version in 7:24-27 • Luke’s version in 6:46-49

  9. Luke’s Builder Parable • 46“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” • Lead-in and context to parable • Setting • Matthew: Sermon on the Mount • Luke: Sermon on the Plain • Primary audience is disciples • Builder parable occurs at end of both • Jesus’ call to his disciples to action

  10. Luke’s Builder Parable • 47 “Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like:” • Disciples had been listening to Jesus’ sermon • Call to action is to put teachings into practice • Simply hearing, knowing, and acknowledging not enough…?

  11. Luke’s Builder Parable • 48 “He is like a man building a house, who dug [down and dug] deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.” • Luke  Foundation Matthew  Rock • Picture of great effort to get to the rock

  12. Luke’s Builder Parable • 49 “But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” • Luke  No foundation Matthew  Sand • No effort to find the rock • Appearance and function of house the same

  13. Setting and Context • The Twelve chosen on mountain (Luke) • Jesus and disciples come down (Luke) • Disciples and great crowd gather • Sermon on the Mount / Plain • Jesus proclaims “New Law”

  14. New Law 43“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven… 48You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Matthew 5:43-48

  15. New Law 27“But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you… 35But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.” Luke 6:27-36

  16. Setting and Context • The Twelve chosen on mountain (Luke) • Jesus and disciples come down (Luke) • Disciples and great crowd gather • Sermon on the Mount / Plain • Jesus articulates “New Law” • The appeal to listeners (disciples) • Parable of the Two Builders

  17. Exodus • The 12 tribes are “chosen” to be God’s people • Moses goes up Mt. Sinai, then comes down • People gather • Moses “gives” the Law • Instructions given for construction of Sanctuary • Rebellion (hear but not do) • Covenant renewed, law given again • Sanctuary built (hear and do)

  18. Sermon and Exodus Sermon on the Mount/Plain Exodus Israel chosen Moses and mountain Israelite assembly Law given Construction of sanctuary Hears and obeys Hears but rebels • The Twelve selected • Jesus and mountain • Disciples and crowd • “New law” given • Parable of builders • Hears and does • Hears and does not

  19. To Be Continued… • Similarities between Sermon and Exodus • Giving of Law • Construction of a house  sanctuary • Is there connection between “Law” and “House?” • “Law”  Reflection of God’s nature/character • “House”  ??? • Hearing by itself is insufficient • Insufficient for what? Why? • Jesus’ call to his disciples is to “hear and do” • What about the builders and the houses?
