  1. ACROSTIC POEMS GLE 0301.3.1 Write for a variety of purposes and to a variety of audiences. GLE 0301.3.3 Know and apply the steps of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, evaluating, and publishing.

  2. What is an ACROSTIC POEM? • An acrostic poem uses the letters in a topic word to begin each line. All the lines should relate to the topic word. • In this case you will be writing an acrostic poem using the letters in your first name.

  3. Here is an example using my name. Did you notice that this is a sentence? So I ended it with punctuation. Another sentence so I used punctuation again. • My name is Mrs. Carter. • Reading is something I like to do. • Silly sometimes • Caring • Apples, especially green ones, are my favorite. • Really organized • Tries to be efficient at all times • Energetic in the mornings • Ready for a great school year! This is just a phrase. It is okay that I don’t have punctuation here. You can do that in an acrostic poem. But remember if it IS a sentence then it needs to have punctuation. Did you notice that each line starts with a letter of my name? Did you also notice that each line is about ME?

  4. You will work on an ACROSTIC POEM today. The letters of your name will go on these short lines. Remember each line (sentence or phrase) will start with that letter of your name. Your sentences or phrases will be written on the longer lines.

  5. You will be graded based on this rubric. Pay attention to it! The rubric will help you get a good grade.

  6. When you are done… 1. Double check it. That means look at and reread the rubric. Make sure you can get all of those points. 2. Reread your acrostic poem. If you can’t read it then chances are I won’t be able to either. 3. Read the acrostic to a person at your table group. They might be able to help you make it better. If they can’t read it then chances are I won’t be able to either. 4. Make any changes that you feel you need to make. 5. Place it in the Reading/Language tray.
