Recognizes the basic elements of a variety of genres (e.g., poetry, fables, folktales). • PLO : The student will identify the basic elements of an acrostic poem and complete a graphic organizer that will consist of their thoughts or ideas on a selected topic.

  3. Acrostic Poetry • Topic word is chosen and is written vertically • First letter of each line spells out a word/phrase • Each line in the poem relates to the topic

  4. Prewriting • Determine your audience • Decide on your topic • Come up with different words/phrases about topic • Write those words/phrases in graphic organizer

  8. Practice Activity • Write acrostic poem as a class • Topic is SCHOOL • The class and I will share the pen • Ideas about the topic will be added to the acrostic graphic organizer • I will use lottery cards for student selection

  9. Assessment Activity • You will create a graphic organizer for an acrostic poem using RECESS as the topic

Recognizes the basic elements of a variety of genres (e.g., poetry, fables, folktales). PLO: The student will draft an acrostic poem using the graphic organizer that they created during prewriting.

  11. Form of Writing • Topic word is chosen and is written vertically • First letter of each line spells out a word/phrase • Each line in the poem relates to the topic

  12. Drafting The information from your graphic organizer will help during drafting. • Write your topic vertically along the edge of left margin • Each letter of the word begins new line • Phrases/ideas you use must start with the letter at the beginning of the line • Poem does not have to rhyme
