  1. Dr. Adrian Covill - Nuclear EngD graduate The dissolution of an Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) glass in the Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) near-field. Academic supervisor - Prof. Neil Hyatt, Industrial supervisor - Dr. Joanne Hill

  2. Presentation Content Project background and the industrial problem Introduction to the GeoMelt glass studied Chemical durability in water Chemical durability in the repository environment Industrial significance of the research

  3. Background and the Industrial Problem The Nuclear EngD project Oil & Gas and Oil Sands What is the industrial problem that needs solving?

  4. The GeoMelt Glass

  5. Glass Chemical Durability in Water Normalised mass loss values for B, Na and Si at 90°C in water

  6. Glass Chemical Durability in Water Normalised mass loss values for B at 50°C in water

  7. Glass Chemical Durability in Repository Normalised mass loss values for B at 50°C in high pH (~12.4) solution

  8. Industrial Significance The results from this glass project has improved confidence with respect to this novel ILW disposal strategy (using glass rather than cement) and is beginning to reduce uncertainty with respect to glass dissolution and interaction with the repository near-field.

  9. Thank you for listening. Do you have any questions?
