  1. Application of Technology to Historical Research • Collaborative effort by: • Michael Polczynski – Georgetown University • PhD candidate studying Ottoman Empire frontiers • Mark Polczynski – Marquette University • Faculty – College of Engineering Application of Technology to Hisorical Research

  2. Some technologies that can augment historical research: • GIS Systems (Google Earth) • Smart phone cloud on-site data acquisition (GIS Cloud) • Wiki collaboration (MediaWiki) • Network analysis (Pajek) • Agent-based modeling (NetLogo) • Data mining and machine learning (Weka) Application of Technology to Hisorical Research

  3. Converts Excel database of sites with attributes into a map that can be displayed on Google Earth and other GIS systems. Database created and maintained by Michael Polczynski Excel application written by Mark Polczynski Application of Technology to Hisorical Research

  4. http://www.giscloud.com/ • Allows data collected on-site to be uploaded via smart phone to a cloud for display by GIS systems such as Google Earth. • User can design custom data collection forms to capture relevant site attributes, including photos and recordings. • Data can be downloaded to XLS2KML database. Application of Technology to Hisorical Research

  5. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki Wiki technology is designed to support collaborative generation and sharing of information. Application of Technology to Hisorical Research

  6. http://pajek.imfm.si/doku.php?id=pajek • Used to document and analyze time-varying relationships among elements of: • Geographical networks such as primary trade routes; • Governmental administrative hierarchy (who reports to whom) • Ecclesiastical administrative hierarchy (who reports to whom).
