What Is Summon? • Summon is a Google-like search engine that provides fast, relevancy-ranked results: • Enter the search terms into a single search box or select Advanced Search options from the results page • Refine (limit) results by criteria such as date, subject, academic journals and other options • View results, and link directly to full text or more details • Contains links to Hinari resources in e-journals and e-books.

  4. Summon vs. PubMed • Summon uses the keywords in a search as it does not have a controlled vocabulary. The results are broader and you have to ‘filter’ them. The search results include links to the full-text journal articles and e-books that is available in your country. • PubMed uses a controlled vocabulary – a human assigns medical subject headings (MeSH) to each journal article. Search results will be accurate.

  5. Enter your HINARI USER NAME and PASSWORD in the appropriate boxes, change the language of the portal (if necessary), then click on the Login button. Note: To have access to the full text articles, you must properly sign in.

  6. Click on the Hinari logo to open the program. All the programs your institution is registered for are listed. Login to any of the other programs by returning to this page (use the R4L Portal – Applications tab at the top of the web browser). To open another program, click on the specific logo. Your Hinari username and password will grant access to the other programs (and ditto for your institution’s AGORA, ARDI or OARE logins).

  7. Access to Full-text articles from SAML Publishers • Elsevier, Oxford University Press, Springer, Thieme and Wolters Kluwer – Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins use the SAML authentication system. • For access to full-text articles via Hinari/Summon (Google Scholar and Hinari/ PubMed), a journal from these publishers needs to be opened in Hinari prior to opening the specific programs. • Go to the Hinari Training page (www.who.int/hinari/training/), open Hinari_Basic_Course_Module_4_Appendix and follow the instructions.

  8. From the HINARI Content page, open the Search inside HINARI full-text through database and article searching list to access Summon – HINARI search. Search results are limited to the full-text material available in the specific country.

  9. Now click on the Summon-HINARI Search link.

  10. A list of Summon (country) search sites is displayed. Go to Cambodia or another country on the list and click on the link. You will have access to ejournals and ebooks that, via HINARI, are available in Cambodia or the country of your choice.. …

  11. If your country is not listed in the Summon search sites, it does not have a profile. Go to HINARI Summon General Use at the bottom of the list and click on this. This General Use category is for countries where the publishers have granted access to all or almost all resources.

  12. Enter hospital infections AND developing countries in the Search box and click on Search.Note the icon to the Advanced Search option.

  13. The search returned 137,155 results. The availability of full-text articles and books is noted by a symbol. In the left column, there are numerous ways to Refine your search including Content Type and Subject Terms options. Content Type includes all material available from HINARI – Journal Articles, eBook, Book Reviews, Report…

  14. Note: Results are significantly smaller if “…” are used for the terms: hospital infections AND “developing countries” – 99,799 “hospital infections” AND developing countries – 3,381 “hospital infections” AND “developing countries” - 1,781

  15. Click on Full Text Online to go to the document – in this case, #7 of the search.

  16. Now displayed is the Content available page. Click on the Article Full Text option.

  17. We now have opened the Full-text article fromClinical Infectious Diseases (the 7th article in the search results). Note the Full Text HTML (Views), Full Text PDF other options.

  18. The PDF of the article is displayed.

  19. Click on Full Text Online to go to the document – in this case, #4 of the search.

  20. To access the full-text, from Elsevier, Oxford University Press, Springer, Thieme, and Wolters/Kluwer – Lippincott Williams & Wilkins – see slide #7 or the Basic_Course_Module_4_Appendix.

  21. Now click on the Full Text Online for the 27th article of the search.

  22. The link to the full-text article is Not Found. For options, see the next slide.

  23. Return to the HINARI Content page and try to access the full text article via the Journals collection A-Z listing.

  24. From the J listing, the link to the Journal of Infection Prevention is displayed. Click on the link to this journal. This journal also can be accessed via the Publishers drop down menu if the publisher (Sage) is known.

  25. The contents of the specific journal is displayed.The article will be in Volume 2 (2013).

  26. Displayed is the access to the full-text article.The specific article will be in Volume 2 (2013).

  27. Another useful Summon searching option is when PubMed’s ‘Link Out’ software does not access the full text articles. (When you click on the Hinari icon in PubMed, you get a message to login with a personal password or pay a fee for access to the article.) Use the Hinari Summon search tool: • In PubMed, check the boxes of the articles you want. Save the articles to a file (use the send to drop down menu). • Open the .txt file. Copy the article title. • Open Summon (bottom of Search inside Hinari fulltext through database… list) • In Summon, enter the title in the Search box and complete search. • Note: if your institution does not have access to the specific publisher, you will not get the full-text of this article in Summon.

  28. Click on the Preview option to view more information on the specific journal article.

  29. The article’s Preview information is displayed and includes the like to the Full Text Online.

  30. Click on the Email icon.

  31. Displayed are the instructions to send a specific citation via Email

  32. Another useful tool is the save the items (+) option. This will highlight the icon in red and the + sign These results can be emailed or printed.

  33. The slide shows 3 Saved Items (+) option. Note the Export to, Print, and Email options and also how to Clear all saved items. Click on x – to return to search.

  34. The left column has several refine your search options – Content Type, Publication Date, Discipline and Subject Terms.

  35. Scroll down the Filter options to Publication Date. Click on last 12 months in the Publication Date boxes. Note that you can enter specific dates. Now displayed are 9,352 results sorted by relevance.

  36. Also added is the Book Chapter Filter along with the Last 12 months date Filter.The new search has 298 citations. Remember to Clear Filters or they will be included in future searches.

  37. Specific types of material can be excluded by clicking on the X icon.

  38. Now Clear Filters and click on Book/eBook option.The results for this search are 10724.Open search result #1. Note: for new searches, you can Keep search refinements or do a New search.

  39. Displayed is the access to a Oxford University Press Book to access the Oxford Medicine Online link.

  40. One of the OXFORD MEDICINE ONLINE eBook titles is displayed with Download PDFs and Export option (click on Read More). If you are unable to access the book from the Summon full-text link, go back to the Hinari home page and open the book from the Books collection A-Z.
