Light Microscopes 2.02: Investigate and describe the structure and function of cellular organelles
The Light Microscope • Total Power Magnification: Eyepiece power multiplied by the Objective power. • Usually there are 3 objective powers: • Low: 4x magnification • Medium: 10x magnification • High: 40x magnification
Calculating Total Magnification • If the eyepiece power is 10x…. • At a low magnification of 4x, multiply these two numbers together to get a total magnification of 40x. • At a medium magnification of 10x, you would get a total magnification of 100x. • And at a high magnification of 40x, you would get a total magnification of 400x!
Parts of a Microscope • Eye Piece • Arm • Nosepiece • Objective Lenses • Stage • Stage Clips • Diaphragm
Parts of a Microscope • Coarse Adjustment Knob • Fine Adjustment Knob • Light Source • Base
Microscope Invention • Leeuwenhoek: (1600’s) Invented the first simple microscope to look at bacteria. • Hooke: Used a compound microscope to look at cork and saw CELLS!!
