  1. The Louisiana Purchase Why was the Mississippi so important to the US? How did the US purchase Louisiana?

  2. Control of the Mississippi • 1800: 1milion people living between Appalachian Mts and Mississippi River • Most were farmers • Needed to ship wheat and corn down river

  3. Control of the Mississippi • Needed to get to New Orleans • Spain controlled it • Pinckney Treaty: Spain allowed Americans to ship their goods down and store them in New Orleans

  4. Control of the Mississippi • However, Spain signed a treaty giving Louisiana back to France 1800 • Napoleon wanted to grow food in America and ship to West Indies • However Africans in Haiti revolted • Much like the French Revolution
