  2. Essay themes • Key research questions: “The challenges created by scale in China, the size of the physical landscape and the enormity of all data values.”

  3. Essay title • Describe China’s physical geography. Suggest how it influences the country’s population distribution and density. • (25 marks; approx. 2 – 4 sides of A4, 6 – 800 words + maps/graphs/diagrams etc.) • Start planning this & writing it based on the research carried out by each group. Have it ready to hand in on Thursday next week. • NB you will have 45 minutes to answer each essay in the exam.

  4. How do I structure an essay? • 3 parts – introduction, main body of evidence and arguments, conclusion. • Introduction: ensure you clarify the key terms, identify scale, example areas, clarify command word(s) etc – in other words identify what you will be writing about and any arguments you will be putting forward. • Main body: present your findings in words, with data & with maps. Make links between the data sets, analyse patterns, refer to command words. • Conclusion: bring together key ideas, refer back to your introductory statements, ensure question is answered.

  5. Useful style points • No side headings! • Incorporate maps, graphs etc into the essay at the appropriate points & annotate them as appropriate. • Do not write “…, e.g., China…” When you use an example develop it. • If you refer to “…heavy rainfall…”, quote values to support your point; after all, how heavy is “heavy”?. • Do not introduce new material into your conclusion.
