  2. Geography • Russia is the world’s largest country in area, covering more than an eighth of Earth’s land. • It is located in the continent of Asia • It shares borders with other countries such as: Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, and China.

General Information • Population: Russia has about 142 million people making it the ninth largest population in the world. • Language Spoken: People in Russia speak different variations of Russian and Russian based languages. It changes depending on which part of Russia the person is from. Slavic, Ukrainian, Polish, and Russian. • From of Government: The government has a Federal Semi-Presidential Republic • Primary Religion: The main form of religion in Russia is Russian Orthodox

General Information Continued • Russians made great contributions to arts during the 1800s • Music is a great part of their society. • Architecture and paintings are some of their best forms of art • 80% of population is from a Russian ancestry • Historical Background: They were ruled by a noble Viking warrior class at the start of the country’s life. By the 18th century, the nation had expanded through conquest and annexation to become the Russian Empire stretching from Poland to Alaska. Russia entered a transitional period from communism to a state-controlled economy to a private enterprise.

Foods • Pirozhki are small, stuffed buns (pies) • Cabbage is a main part of the Russian cuisine along with sour cream • Varenyky is the Russian word for Perogies • Light soups and stews based on water and vegetables. • Noodle soups include meat, mushrooms, and milk. • There are soups based on cabbage • Thick soups based on meat broth, with a salty-sour base like rassolnik and solyanka • Ukha is an example of a fish soup

  8. Breakfast to Dinner • Typical breakfast foods in Russia include eggs, porridge, sausages, cheese, bread, butter, and jam. • Most of the people eat their main meal at midday. It consists of a salad or appetizer; soup; meat or fish with potatoes or kasha (cooked buckwheat); and dessert, such as stewed fruit or pastries. • In the evening, most Russians eat a light supper.
