The Russian Government • Russia is a federation as well as a presidential republic • President – head of state • Prime Minister – head of government • Executive power is exercised by the government • Legislative power is vested in the government and in the two chambers of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation (Parliament)

Government (cont) • President elected by the people, making the govt legitimate, for a 4 year term • Eligible for a 2nd term, but barred from a 3rd. • Federal Assembly consists of 2 chambers • 450 member State Duma • 176 member Federation Council • Constitutional justice in the court is based on equality for all citizens. • Judges are independent and subject only to law • Trials are to be open, and the accused is to be given a defense.
