  3. Characteristics of Modern Sport • Secularism-Not Attached to religion • Equality of Opportunity to Compete and Conditions of Play-Inequality of access for minorities and women is different. But this means that humans play humans, and that court sizes and balls are all uniform size for all. • Specialization of Roles-Players play positions and become experts at them. Also Amateur vs. Professional discussion. • Rationalization-Creation of rules, technique, and training. • Bureaucratization-Regulators, rule makers (NCAA, IOC, NBA, NFL, MLB) • Quantification-Keeping statistics in order to evaluate achievement. • Quest for Records-Compete against history.
