  2. Paper • Wood Pulp • Written communication • Papyrus • Used for; schools, offices, letters, etc.

  3. The trees in which Paper comes from. • Hardwood-Oaks, Maples. Paper made from theses trees are week, but make smooth paper. • Softwood- Pines and Spruces. Paper is much stronger, used for shipping. • Combination-makes the best paper.

  4. Steps to making paper: Debarking • The process starts with cutting trees so the bark needs removed. • A large rotating drum is used to debark the trees.

  5. Chipping • Before the logs are pulped, they are cut up into small chips.

  6. Pulping • The chips are put into a chemical solution, they are cooked in digesters. • Boiled in sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide. • Filters

  7. Bleaching • Removes lignin. • Use chlorine gas and chlorine dioxide.

  8. Paper Machine • Stock Preparation- 99% water • Press Section-40-50 % water • Dryer Section 2-6 % water • Size Press Coating- makes the paper smooth and strong.

  9. Blade Coater • Different coatings on the paper. • Makes paper good for printing.

  10. Supercalender • Makes the paper glossy and smooth. • Made up of rollers that put pressure on the paper.

  11. Sheet Converting • The paper rolls are cut into sheets.
