Ecology • the study of how living things interact with each other and their environment
Important Vocab • Biome : major regional group of distinctive plant and animal communities best adapted to the region's physical natural environment • Ex: ??? • Ecosystem : a system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their physical environment • Ex : ???
Vocab • Biotic factor : biological influence on organisms within an ecosystem • Living, lived before, can be dead, can be parts of living things • Come up with 5… • Plants, Animals, Trees, Fungi, Algae,
Vocab • Abiotic factor : physical, or nonliving, factor that shapes an ecosystem • Non living, never lived, are not dead, are not parts of living things • Come up with 5… • Water, Air, Soil, Temp, Sunlight
Vocab • Population : all members of a species in a particular area • Population Density : the number of members of a species compared to how large the area they reside in
Vocab • Limiting Factor : an environmental factor that prevents a population from increasing • Community : all the different populations that live in an area
Intro to food chains/energy flow video • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBagx9Qhdx8&feature=related
What is life? • 1. made of cells containing DNA • 2. respond to stimuli • 3. take in energy and export waste • 4. reproduce • 5. grow • ( self propelled movement)
Vocab • Producers: Have chlorophyll and can produce their own energy from the sun through photosynthesis. • Ex: plants
Vocab • 2. Consumers: An organism that gets its food from (consuming) other living things, in order to have enough energy to survive or reproduce. • Ex : horse, wolf, bear, deer
Vocab • 3. Decomposers: (saprobes) get their energy by decomposing dead organic matter • Enrich the soil with nutrients. • Ex: insects, microscopic animals, fungi, and bacteria
Vocab • Troph – Eater or feeder • Autotroph – producer • Photoautotrophs energy source = light • Chemoautotrophs energy source = chemicals in environment Ex : certain bacteria and archaea
Vocab • Heterotroph - consumer • Habitat – space where an animal lives, it provides food, water, and shelter • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5wTRCyEbFA&feature=related
Vocab • Niche – the role a species plays in an ecosystem • How it responds to and affects resources • Competitive exclusion principle : no two species can occupy the same niche in the same environment for a long time. • Two species that compete for the exact same resources cannot stably coexist
Relationships • Symbiosis : A relationship between two or more species • Commensalism : One organism benefits, the other is unchanged
Relationships • Mutualism : both organisms benefit from the relationship
Relationships • Parasitism : one organism benefits, while the other is harmed • http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/nature/brood-parasite.html

3 Major Ecosystems • Freshwater • Ocean • Terrestrial
Freshwater • Relatively small ~ 1.8% of earth's surface • Support many fish, amphibians, insects and plants. • Base of food-web is freshwater Plankton (small microscopic organisms)
Ocean • ~ 75% of earth’s surface • 40% of all photosynthesis occurs in oceans. • Photosynthetic plankton = base of food chain. • Only in Deep ocean surface & Shallow ocean ecosystems • No photosynthesis can occur in deep ocean because light cannot penetrate deeply into water • http://vimeo.com/10219568
Terrestrial • Location usually dependent on the latitude of the area, and amount of precipitation
