  3. To begin with… • How many of you have any idea about Buddhism? • What do you know? • How do you know it?

  4. To begin with some more… • Buddha was not fat. • Just so you know. • Buddha was actually a Prince born in modern day Nepal around 563 B.C.E.

  5. Buddha • The term “Buddha” actually means the “Enlightened One” • Buddha’s real name was Siddhartha Guatama • He was a Prince who lived a lavish life… • We will elaborate more on him later…

  6. The Ideas of Buddhism… • Buddhist have a series of ideas and principles that they do believe in… • Reincarnation is one of those things. • Buddhists believe that one can be reincarnated many times over in an attempt to achieve “Enlightenment” or “Nirvana”

  7. Enlightenment • Enlightenment (Salvation) can be achieved through knowing and practicing the… • Four Noble Truths • Eightfold Path to Enlightenment

The Four Noble Truths • All human life involves suffering and sorrow. • The desire for a life of pleasure and material gain causes suffering and sorrow. • Renouncing desire frees people from suffering and helps their souls attain “Nirvana.” • The Eightfold Path leads to Renunciation, or denial of desire and attainment of Nirvana.

  9. The Eight Fold Path • Right Views: Seeing Life as it Really Is • Right Intentions: Living a life of good will; striving toward perfection • Right Speech: Avoiding Lies and Gossip • Right Action: Trying to be law-abiding and honest.

  10. Path Cont’d… • Right Living: Avoiding work that harms others. • Right Effort: Seeking to prevent evil. • Right Mindfulness: Constant awareness of one’s self • Right Concentration: Directing the mind in meditation

  11. Nirvana… • You’ve heard of the band, but what is it? • Nirvana is a state of nothingness… • No more suffering • No more pain • No heaven, nor the bad place… • The flame is gone…

  12. Why Study it Though? • Well…there are a couple of different reasons… • Buddhism is the 6th most popular religion in the world with nearly 500 million followers. • That’s more people than there are in the United States… • What happens if you ever come into contact with a Buddhist person?
