Statistics, between the 1999–2000 and 2005–06 school years, • K–12 faith-based education sector lost nearly 1,200 schools and nearly 425,000 students. • National concern for a number of important reasons. Forgenerations, these schools have played an invaluable role in America’s cities. • To lose these schools is to lose a positive, central character in the narrative of urban America.”” • Adventist schools ranked 3ed. nationally for school closing in Urban locations. • Ask – a school you attended is now CLOSED ?  (Dnjr- in Md)

  4. National – Regional - Local • Basic factors: Adventist Education (national) • No national Strategy – 51 conferences 850+ individual sail boats… not one big aircraft carrier! • Budget - who has the $$ • Where are the “people” resources to implement changes, improvements ?

  5. Decline – Conference • AR./La. Conf. experience of decline - 36 schools in Mid 1980’s to 12 today. • Organization “unit” of Conference / State • lower 26 states have avg. of 9.8 schools per state. The smallest 13 states – avg. 6.3 schools • Conf: OK – 5, West Va. - 9 Minn. – 12 • Texas 48, Mich 56, Wash.56, Fl. 70 – Calf.1_

  6. Education Leadership • Great respect for all teachers and leaders • How to change….impact the collective “organization” to lead schools toward new direction. • “Skilled Incompetence” … leaders avoid conflict . . “Organizational defensive routines designed to avoid surprises, embarrassment or threats, . . .prevent learning and prevent organizations from investigating or eliminating the underlying problems”

  7. 2009 - Adv. Ed. Group (AEG) • Cost of turning around schools: If each conference paid 10 Part time $20 K = $10M • Presentation to NAD, Union, and Conference • Support from Donors $ . . . • A.E.G. – to operate, fund, manage schools • What we found out::

  8. “community” involvement • Ozark Academy – Ark./La. Conference • “General community” …local community , Alumni, and donors, • Expanded roles of Parent Assoc. • Expanded - non-traditional involvement • Result: dramatic increase enrollment in 2 – 3 years.

  11. Conclusion - “Our Generation” • Will it be said . . . This is My problem/issue • “ Will it be said of our generation that we presided over the demise of the . ..( Adventist schools) • “will it be said of our generation that we LACKED THE RESOLVE TO PRESERVE national treasures build upon the sacrifice of others….” N.Dame Study • Brick Walls… not to keep us out.. • Randy from Last Lecture

  12. At your school / conference • Vision: cast a specific vision with a Plan • Determine need… Be Specific • Technology – Face book, insta-gram, your Message must be “heard and Seen” Blow a certain Trumpet. • Don’t focus on the $$. . . focus short term and long term goals/vision. • Decision Platform – Unity of purpose, priorities and decide in the present …today • Take Action….
