History of LSD • LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide)-hallucinogen drug • by the Swiss chemist Albert Hoffmann in the Sandoz laboratories in Basel, Switzerland on November 16, 1938. • It was not until five years later on April 19, 1943, that the psychedelic properties were found. • LSD was originally perceived as a psychotomimetic capable of producing model psychosis.By the mid 1950s, LSD research was being conducted in major American medical centers, where researchers used LSD as a means of temporarily replicating the effects of mental illness.

  4. Government and LSD • By the mid-sixties the negative view against the use of LSD and the effects on the values of the Western middle class caused the government to step in and put a restriction on the availability of the drug stating it be illegal.

  5. Physical Effects of LSD • Pupil Dialation • Reduced appitate • Wakefulness • Increased Heart Rate • Increased Saliva Production • Not Addictive

  6. Psychological Effects of LSD • Tripping Balls • Users experience LSD as causing significant changes in their personality and life perspective • Altered Sense of Time • Chance of a Bad Trip

  7. Sensory Effects of LSD • Altered senses, emotions, memories, time, awareness • High lasts for 6-14 hours, taking about 30-90 minutes to kick in • Visual effects include: “walls breathing” (movement of inanimate objects), appearance of moving colored objects etc.

  8. Potential Uses of LSD • Used in Psychiatry for its Perceived Therapeutic Value • Treatment of Alcoholism?!? • Pain and Headache Relief • Spiritual Purposes • Enhance Creativity • DEA does not Support any of these examples

  9. The Psychedelic 60’s • One of the major social changes in the 60’s was the use of LSD. LSD was primarily used by jazz musicians and hip characters in the inner cities. By the mid 60’s seemingly overnight, LSD use was common across the country, especially among the young.

  10. LSD and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest • The author of this book, Ken Kesey, was involved in a drug experiment at Stanford University and helped discover LSD. • LSD connects to the book because the author took LSD.
