  1. Finding Purple: Gender Norms and Feminism “I felt the starched walls of a pink cotton penitentiary closing in on me, and for the second time in my life I thought of running away. Immediately.” (14.24)

  2. Today’s Objectives

  3. On the agenda and why it matters!

  4. Writing Warm up Be a man… Act like a lady… When do you hear people make these statements? What are other characteristics associated with each gender? Write for both columns, please.

  5. Boxes What else comes along with the “boy toys” and “girl toys?” Who draws the box?

  6. Let’s check out some current views on gender roles… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyTQDX-ItiM&list=TL3fM4AVjYlDPzcsSMwScvK4vrFI4RIhd8 What traditional gender norms does this preview address? http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jensiebelnewsom/the-mask-you-live-in What traditional gender norms does this preview address?

  7. Finding Gender Norms in TKAM We’re going to read through chapter 14 as a class. Each time you see a line that illustrates or addresses a gender norm, make a note of it in your class notes. Compare your notes to a partner’s.

  8. Persepolis by MarjaneSatrapi Please complete the questions in the class notes after you have completed the reading.

  9. Make your own comic! • You will have the remainder of the class to work with a partner and create a comic strip version of TKAM’s chapter 14. • The comic will count as participation points and as the exit slip out the door. • I will be looking for creativity, a grasp of plot of chapter 14, and also a clear representation of Scout’s rebellion against gender norms.  • If you finish early, I have an article about gender norms in The Hunger Games. If you read this and write a reflection, you can receive a bonus participation point for the day!
