Collaborative Research: Probing Atomic Structure Changes in Deformation of Metallic GlassesWojciech Dmowski, University of Tennessee Knoxville, DMR 0906744

Metallic glasses (MGs) are structurally disordered solids without the periodic order as in crystalline metals. Experimentally we can only assess average atomic configurations. For that reason, relating glass structure to properties is such a challenge. In our research we combine a scattering experiment, which provides the averaged atomic local structure defined by a pair distribution function, (PDF) with large scale molecular dynamics, which provides a 3D atomic model of a glass.

We examined the structure of a Zr50Cu40Al10 glass after high pressure compression and high temperature annealing. We observed chemical disordering. This also resulted in the change of elastic constants.

The Figures show a 2D diffraction image, the structure function and change in the pair distribution function.

The College of Arts And Sciences and the College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, partnered with two Knox County Schools to initiate a program--the UT Pre-Collegiate Research Scholars Program. Farragut High School and Fulton High School seniors working under the direction of their high school teacher mentors are awarded scholarships to work with faculty mentors in UT research laboratories. The program’s goal is to develop a model for hosting high school students in UT research laboratories so that they may experience the excitement of scientific research and engage in their own original research.

We have established international collaborations:

- manufacturing and severe plastic deformation of MG with Materials Research Center, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan;

-high pressure, high temperature sample processing with the Institute of High Pressure Physics, Polish Academy of Science, Warsaw, Poland.
