Speaking and listening • Comprehension and Collaboration • Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas 4.) Language • Conventions of Standard English • Knowledge of Language • Vocabulary Acquisition and Use (Each standard area is accompanied by grade specific standards)

Key points • The standards define the skills that students are expected to know and be able to do, not how teachers teach. • The standards must be complimented by a well-developed, content-rich curriculum. • The goal of the standards is to articulate the fundamentals, not to list a set of restrictions. • The standards do not define intervention methods or materials/resources necessary to support students who are below grade level expectations.

  7. Jigsaw • Group #1 Reading • Group #2 Writing • Group #3 Language and Listening/Speaking • In your groups become experts with your assigned ELA component. Record the highlights of each standard on chart paper. • Share out your findings

  8. Reflect • Use the guided questions to reflect on the new common core standards. Basically where are we and where do we need to be.
