  1. Higher P.E. Skills and Techniques Information Processing Model/ Model Performers

  2. Information Processing Model • 1. Input information. This is the information I receive from my senses, e.g. sight and sound. • 2. Decision making I then have to make decisions based on the input information I have received. Sifting more important information from less information is the second part of the loop. • 3.   Output. This is the way I decide to move to and respond to the decisions I have made. • 4. Feedback. During and after my chosen response I will receive information about my performance.

  3. Cont…. • Remember: • This is a continuous process and the more experienced you are the better you are at it. • It takes lots of practice to develop and good performers can do it automatically. • Information processing relies on a lot of other factors such as previous learned experiences, timing, reaction time, and anticipation. • Previous experience counts for a lot because the more experiences you have the better your timing becomes and you learn to react and anticipate what is going to happen. • Therefore, practising each stage of the learning loop will improve decision making and develop your badminton performance.

  4. From the marking scheme Information Processing • Relevant description; this may be supported with use of a diagram. The description should include details appropriate to the skill/technique selected. • The 4 stages should appear in sequence order of • INPUT via stimuli/senses/instruction/demonstration or feedback offered. • DECISION MAKING − action to be taken. • OUTPUT via taking appropriate action. • EVALAUTION − what was the outcome of action taken; successful/unsuccessful, effective/ineffective.

  5. Features of Model Performer • If we are asked about a model performer we will talk about their: Technique Accuracy Range/Decision Making

  6. What would we mention about their Technique? ?????? • Movements are performed with maximum efficiency and minimum effort • Movements are carried out in a fluent controlled way • Correct Preparation, Action and Recovery of technique • Be able to carry out each sub-routine of the skill automatically, • having an economy of movement, which allows greater court efficiency, and improved preparation for shots. • A more automatic technique allows greater awareness of space on court to attack • more time can be given to other cues in performance. • Technique is carried out properly in order for players to remain balanced between shots.

  7. Accuracy • Being accurate in placing shots where you want them to go • Being consistent in placing shots where you want them to go • greater accuracy and control over the shuttle • able to direct the shuttle away from your opponent, making it harder for them to make a return. • able to pick out weakness of opponents, and guide the shuttle to your opponents weaker areas (e.g. Backhand when at the back of the court) Consistency means that the high ratio of precise attacking shots, inevitably leads to opponent making unforced errors.

  8. Range/Decision Making • Good anticipation • Good judgement of shuttle flight • Appropriate decision-making – skilled performers perform the right skill at the right time • Can disguise shots • Can play a range of shots

  9. Range cont….. • a whole range of attacking and defensive shots, and this makes them more difficult to predict. • greater disguise and creativity, with an ability to adapt and select suitable shots from an array of skills. • greater ability to make decisions for an effective outcome to execute skill with maximum certainty and minimum outlay of energy. • greater levels of mental conditioning in being able to access • Greater concentration, motivation and confidence to make positive and attacking decisions • Able to remain focused in carrying out skilful actions.

  10. Past Paper Question • Describe the features of a skilled performance in Badminton. (4) • In an exam you have 2 and ½ hours to answer 60 marks that gives you approx 2 - 3 minutes a mark. • Mr Wilson “roughly 10 min for 4 marks and 15 mins for 6 marks” • So……you have 10 minutes to answer this question

  11. So why would you compare your performance to a model performer? • Model performers can show you how to improve by giving you a picture of what you are trying to achieve. • It helps you to determine training priorities at the beginning, during and end of your planned improvement programme. • Model performers motivate you to improve - Watching able performers can make performance look exciting and keep you interested in trying to improve. When watching better badminton players you can see a wide range of skills in action. It can make you motivated to work towards performing at their level. • You can study the fine detail of the model performer to learn about the different skills and techniques they use. Model performers can show you how to perform different skills and techniques

  12. Recap- why use a model performer? (copy this on the bottom of your green sheet) • Allows visual image • Motivational • Set goals • Observe breakdown of technique and efficient and orderly sub-routines • Establish range of shots available and ability to disguise • Observe decision making requirements • Observe/copy examples of accuracy/positioning • Provide measurable comparison to aspire to

  13. Homework for Monday 14th Jan Q6 A 2011 Explain the advantages of considering a model performance when developing performance. (4) Q5 B 2012 Choose an activity and a skill or technique. Give specific details of how your performance of this skill or technique compares to a model performance. (4)
