  1. 11.1 Distance & Displacement

  2. Objectives • Represent and analyze the motion of an object graphically. • Analyze the velocity of two objects in terms of distance and time (i.e., verbally, diagrammatically, graphically, mathematically). • Measure and analyze an object’s motion in terms of speed, velocity, and acceleration (i.e., verbally, diagrammatically, graphically).

  3. Frame of Reference A. To describe motion accurately and completely, a _frame_ of _reference__ is necessary. • A _frame_ of _reference_ is a system of _objects_ that are _not_ moving with respect to one another. Who’s moving faster??? hyperlink

  4. Relative Motion B._Relative_ motion is movement in relation to a _frame_ of _reference_. • For example, as a train moves past a platform, people _standing_ on the platform will see those on the train _speeding_ by. • But when the people on the _train_look at one another, they don’t seem to be _moving_at all.

  5. Closure • Represent and analyze the motion of an object graphically. • Analyze the velocity of two objects in terms of distance and time (i.e., verbally, diagrammatically, graphically, mathematically). • Measure and analyze an object’s motion in terms of speed, velocity, and acceleration (i.e., verbally, diagrammatically, graphically).

  6. Homework • Pg. 331 1-7 • Pg. 337 1-6 • Pg. 348 1-6

  8. Measuring Distance and Displacements C. _Distance_ is the length of a _path_ between two _points_. D. Distance is the _length_of the path between two _points_. _Displacement_is the direction from the _starting_point and the _length_of a straight line from the starting point to the _ending_ point.

  9. Measuring Distance & Displacement Distance = 7 X 500ft = 3500ft Displacement = 4 ½ X 500ft = 2250ft

  10. Measuring Distance & Displacement(hyperlink) Distance = 9 x 2000ft = 18000ft Displacement = 6 ½ x 2000ft = 13000ft
