  1. The Moon Earth’s natural satellite

  2. Motions of the Earth & Moon • Earth orbits the sun in 365 days. • Earth rotates on its axis a full circle in about 24 hours. • Moon orbits the Earth. • Moon doesn’t create any light itself, it just reflects the light of the sun. Because of this……………..

  3. Phases of the Moon • The Moon passes through (8) major phases during a cycle that repeats itself every 29.5 days, this is a continuous cycle, there is no beginning or end. • The revolution of the Moon around Earth makes the Moon appear as if it is changing shape in the sky. • This is caused by the different angles from which we see the bright part of the Moon’s surface = phases of the moon.

  4. 8 Phases • New moon • Waxing Crescent • First Quarter • Waxing Gibbous • Full Moon • Waning Gibbous • Last Quarter • Waning Crescent

  5. 1. New MoonPhase • The moon is lined up between the Earth and Sun. (Which eclipse would this be, solar or lunar?) • The illuminated half of the moon is facing away from the Earth, therefore the part that faces is all dark. • The Moon and Sun rise and set about the same time.

  6. 2. Waxing Crescent Moon Phase • As the moon moves around the earth, we see more and more of the illuminated half. • The moon is smaller than a quarter moon. • The moon is waxing, getting bigger each night.

  7. 3. Quarter Moon Phase • A week after the new moon • From Earth, we are looking at the sunlit side of the moon. • The Moon is now one-quarter of the way through the lunar month.

  8. 4. Waxing Gibbous Moon Phase • This phases we see more and more of the illuminated part of the Moon. • Gibbous = humped, larger that a quarter moon but smaller than a full moon

  9. 5. Full Moon Phase • The Moon is now halfway through its revolution (path) around the Earth. • We can see a full disk • At this time the Moon rises at the time the Sun sets and sets when the Sun rises. • When the Moon aligns with the Earth and Sun we get a lunar eclipse. (Sun, Earth, Moon)

  10. 6. Waning Gibbous Moon Phase • The illuminated part of the Moon that we see gets smaller. • Waning = moon gets smaller. • The first week after the full moon is waning gibbous.

  11. 7. Last Quarter Moon Phase • Three weeks after the new moon. • We can see half of the illuminated part of the moon, referred to as the last or third quarter. • The side that we saw dark at the first quarter is now the lit side. (visualize during lab activity)

  12. 8. Waning Crescent Moon Phase • During the fourth week • The moon is getting smaller and smaller. Reminder: The phase you see when you look at the Moon depends on its location to the sun and Earth.
