  1. Update on GEF Pacific Alliance for Sustainability Sub-regional Workshop for GEF Focal Points in the Pacific Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea February 3-4, 2010

Background & History • GEF-PAS consist of 28 projects, GEF Financing approximately US$100million • GEF PAS programme was approved at the GEF Council meeting in April 2008 • GEF PAS has projects in the areas, of International Waters, Biodiversity, Climate Change Mitigation, Climate Change Adaptation, and Persistent Organic Pollutants

  9. Implementation Issues and -Coordination • There will be in change in Energizing the Pacific-PNG, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Kiribati . • World Bank will change project and resubmit as 4MSPs • World Bank should able finalize submission of outstanding PIFs, CEO endorsements by the end of 2nd quarter this year • Discussions with World Bank Continue on this issue. • CEO has written to Australia and New Zealand on issue. Coordination issue will be finalized during the course 2nd quarter of this year

  10. Co-Finance • Co-finance is an issue in the region • GEF is flexible on the issue of co-finance and baseline costs • GEF Trust Fund provides finance for the incremental costs • Agency should help to provide and identify cofinance opportunities

  11. Lessons Learned-So Far • What have we learned so far? • From GEF Perspective – (i)Need more planning, coordination and consultation at the beginning of the programme between all of the agencies, countries and GEF (ii) Need to link GEF –PAS to other activities in the region. Enhance cooperation, synergies etc • What have you learned? How can we improve? How can we support you in a better way ? How do we move forward in GEF5?
