Background. • 1884, Declared English Protectorate, Port Moresby developed mainly along the coast with a population of 5,000. • Current population approx 250,000. • 62% have access to reticulated sewerage system. • By 2020, projected population 437,266 • Pressure on the sewerage system • System divided into two geographical catchment areas.

  3. Background cont • Inland catchment ( 70% ) • Coastal Catchment ( 30 % ) • The inland catchement ( Waigani, Morata • & Gerehu operated by open Stabilization pond treatment system. • Coastal catchment ( Idubada, Hanuabada, Konedobu, Town, Koki & Badili discharge outfalls without treatment.

Challenges • Manage city's population increase @ 2.7% annually. • Paga point to Kilakila 63,000 in 2020 • Increase in water consumption, as well increase sewerage discharge. • Adopt a proper treatment system for the coastal area. • Govt approved project to upgrade coastal sewerage system. • Control of Industrial Waste, major challenge.
