HPRF FARADAY PARTNERSHIP • An inclusive partnership of UK based industrial, governmental and academic organisations to develop & support a growing business built round microwave power • Commonality in technology and organisation across applications areas. • Sponsor courses in Microwave Power Engineering • Three special interest groups, led by industry with academic & government support • Accelerators • Industrial processing • Defence

Background • HPRF Faraday initially sponsored by DTI and PPARC to support the Accelerator Community • Remit broadened to include other application areas • Industrial partners have strongly supported activities. • DTI funding for Partnership ceases September 2007! • New model for continuation of partnership with self generated funding agreed. • Partnership will continue until needed no longer!

Our approach is to :- • Engage industry, government laboratories and universities to pool knowledge and know-how i.e. networking, technology watch and exchange • Maintain and share up to date intelligence on future projects requiring RF technology • Provide asingle, coordinating point of contact for RF systems specified for future projects • Inform international projects of UK capability • Develop and maintain research strategy and capability

Special Interest Groups Industrial Processing Club • Multidisciplinary National Centre for research, prototyping and exploitation. • Pursuing specific applications, mining and industrial processing – large potential growth • Sustainable manufacturing technology • Overlap with Deffence and Accelerator technology

Special Interest Groups Defence Industries Club • Provides technical and technology advice and support to MoD, OGDs (and others) • Brings together UK academia, government (e.g. Dstl), Industry (e.g. MBDA, e2v), SMEs etc. Inclusivity is crucial. • Significant guidance given to education and training programmes within UK academia • Holds a comprehensive understanding of the UK HPRF capabilities

Special Interest Groups Accelerator Industry Club • Scientific Research , Security and Medical Applications • High Power Components and subsystems • Fostering international links • Bring together researchers and Industry and make case for industrial support • Participate as industry facilitator in R&D programmes

Activities In Support of LCUK • Accelerator club supported EIFast since beginning • Represented UK industry, rather than individual companies! • Provided EIFast board member. • Played leading role in 2006 EIFast XFEL Industry Workshop at DESY during May 9-10 2006 • Agreed with DESY opportunity for greater UK role in conjunction with ASTeC

  11. Activities In Support of LCUK • Supported initiatives to establish SCRF capability in UK • Made case for economic benefits of active participation in ILC etc • None successful so far. • But Industry has bid successfully for contacts for couplers and?

DESY and EIFast • DESY set up EIFast to encourage industrial participation in LC science and technology • Took lead and provided Chair and secretariat • Has indicated that they wish to hand over or share these roles. • UK has expressed interest in playing greater role • Faraday has made a number of proposals to PPARC for support since Feb 2006 • Gained agreement from PPARC/CCLRC for limited funding to pursue this. Nov 2006

DESY board of directors Nov 2006? • DESY welcomes the efforts made by British industry and research representatives to gain additional resources, e.g. public funds, in order to support EIFast's activities. • DESY remains further on actively engaged within the framework of EIFast and will provide financial support and personnel for EIFast's activities to the hitherto existing extent. • If the British initiative to gain additional resources achieves success therein, DESY would welcome a jointly coordinated redistribution of tasks and responsibilities among all involved parties within the framework of EIFast bodies

Progress? since September • Agreement with PPARC/ CCLRC for Faraday to respond positively to DESY call • Faraday partners confirmed desire for Partnership to continue post DTI funding • Way ahead identified based on generation of funds through contractual activities. • PPARC /CCLRC merged to form STFC • We still await funding

Perceived Benefits and Outputsto STFC • Take the lead in drafting a follow-on programme wider interest and relevance to the greater accelerator community • Grow a new enthusiasm within European industry for taking an active interest in the design and construction of accelerators • Encourage and facilitate collaborations and consortia including UK companies that are both technically and commercially prepared to compete on the world stage for major contracts

Perceived Benefits and Outputsto STFC • Form an efficient conduit for the exchange of technology and business information • The facilitation of training and teaching of interested partners, in particular those from industry, in required disciplines • The organisation of workshops, and other focussed gatherings. • The acquisition of a position of influence within European funding sources • Collaboration with the European ILC GDE

  17. Proposal to STFC- we offer • The negotiation and completion of the transfer of the EIFast secretariat to the UK. • The setting up of a secretariat within the UK capable of providing the infrastructure needed to support the activities adequately • The preparation through to acceptance by the EIFast Board of a new programme of activity

  18. Proposal • The attendance at meetings at DESY and hosting of meetings at the Daresbury Laboratory until April 2008. • Working to increase the participation in Eifast of both UK and European Companies and organisations • Working to ensure coherence within the UK’s Knowledge Exchange practitioners
