  1. WGISS in support of CEOS Activities Pakorn Apaphant, Ph.D. May 17, 2010 WGISS 29, Bonn, Germany

  2. WGISS in support of CEOS Activities • Key CEOS Activities in which WGISS is being involved • CEOS Key Deliverables • Virtual Constellations • CEOS in support of GEO Work Plan • CEOS High Profile document • WGCV/WGISS Joint Activities

  3. 1. CEOS Key Deliverables (1/2) • Global Monitoring of Greenhouse Gases from Space (GHG) • Mentioned in their plan that future cooperation with WGISS is expected. • If it is really expected, further discussion with this task team needs to be developed. • Forest Carbon Tracking • It was proposed to support the addition of links in the LSI Constellation Portal to GEO Forest Carbon Tracking information and data • The task team is currently implementing its own FCT portal . Is the proposal still valid? • Climate Change • Climate Diagnostics portal • Any further development or update

  4. 1. CEOS Key Deliverables (2/2) • Data Democracy • Request to respond to USGS’s Perspectives “If under the “Data Democracy” framework larger volumes of satellite sensor data from various CEOS agencies start becoming more broadly available, CEOS member agencies will need to consider the utility of common storage and hosting facilities, and supercomputing facilities to enable data normalization and mosaicking. Cooperative efforts in this area should be considered by the CEOS Working Group on Information Systems and Services.” • CEOS Data Democracy Portal Implementation • Troika is developing a portal to provide access which links to Data, Software, and training Materials available in Data Democracy program • SIT recommends that the implementing team (Troika) should consult with WGISS • These issues to be discussed in the Application Subgroup Session

  5. 2. Virtual Constellations • Land Surface Imaging • Current support: IG and Portal • Request from CEOS Executive Officer “In May 2009, I have had a discussion with José Achache regarding the LSI Portal and he was suggesting to implement a one-stop portal where a single search with geo map support would allow users to query in parallel all the databases of satellite data / products instead of searching each agency /mission portal individually and in sequence. Do you think that we could study the implementation of such a feature (at least for a subset of space agencies if not feasible for all of them)? • Atmospheric Composition • Current Support: IG and Portal • Status will be updated • Any plan for other VCs ? • Ocean Surface Topography, Precipitation, Ocean Color Radiometry, and Ocean Surface Vector Winds

  6. 3. CEOS in support of GEO Work Plan • Action Lead • AR-09-02a: Virtual Constellations, DA-09-01b: Data Metadata and Products Harmonization • Make sure that the outcome will be delivered in time • Supporting • CB-09-05e: Data Democracy, DI-06-09: Use of Satellite for Risk Management • Provide support as requests are made • Not sure what they need HE-09-01: Information for Health, CB-09-02b: Key Climate data from Satellite Systems, CL-09-03b: Forest Carbon Tracking • Need to clarify –Task lead • Regular status update to the WGISS Vice Chair • Any other unseen actions??

  7. 4. CEOS High Profile document • CEOS is developing a “CEOS high profile document” • Simply the second version of “CEOS Deliverables” document • To enhance outside stake holders’ recognition and understanding of the CEOS activities and significance of its contributions. • Four key deliverables (6-8 pages) • Ten deliverable (2 pages) • One of them is “Information Service Structure” (to be written by WGISS) • Data, Metadata, and Products Harmonization  • Web Services Requirements Document • Web Portals • WADC/WGISS needs to revise the first version of CEOS deliverables developed in 2009 and make it in two pages • Ready for printing: September 2010

  8. 5. WGISS –WGCV Joint Activities (1/2) • Previous joint activities • 4 years++ : Cal/Val Portal • 2 years: LSI • Investigating: QA4EO/LSI/CWIC • Current Proposal • WGCV wishes to work with LSI IG and CWIC • Proposed LSI Constellation Portal and Constellation member agency involvement in CEOS WGISS Integrated Catalogue -CWIC; • Potentially utilizing the Portal for early demonstrations of cross agency geographic and temporal satellite data searching and access via CWIC. • A guideline can then be developed in QA4EO

  9. 5. WGISS –WGCV Joint Activities (2/2) • Activity Plan must be well defined • Recommend LSI and WADC to design and a 2010-2011 joint activity plan at this meeting, then coordinate with WGCV (Greg-USGS) • Other initiatives are also welcome; these need to be defined at this meeting and then coordinated with WGCV for the final plan before the next meeting • Plan for the WGCV-WGISS • Introduce plans on the first day of joint meeting • Half to one day joint workshop • Report at the plenary
