JCOMM’s mandate • Further development of the observing networksunder the guidance of and cooperation with GOOS, GCOS, WWW and other operational programmes in seeking commitments for all components of an operational programme in the global oceans. • Implementation of integrated end-to-end data management systemsin collaboration with the Commission for Basic Systems (CBS), the Committee for International Data and Information Exchange (IODE), the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU), and other appropriate data management bodies, to meet the real-time operational needs of the global observing systems.

  3. JCOMM’s mandate (cont.) • Delivery of products and servicesneeded by international science and operational programmes. An important component is the coordination of the safety-related marine meteorological and associated oceanographic services as an integral part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). • Provision of capacity buildingthrough education, training, technology transfer and implementation support. • Establishment and enhancement of partnerships, liaison and collaborationwith other global programmes and international agencies both within and outside the UN system.

MILAC conceptMarine Impacts on Lowland Agriculture and Coastal Resources MILAC aims to contribute to Natural Disaster Reduction in coastal lowlands where marine impacts from Tropical Cyclones cause severe damage to population, agriculture, freshwater, environment, and infrastructure in general

Brief Outline of MILAC Actions • Establishment of Regional inter-organizational for a with the task to define the problem to be approach • With participation of TCP, JCOMM and others, to “define the problem” • Establishment of a solution strategy to mitigate the problem • Developments of tools to implement the strategy • Testing and implementation of tools • Integration of tools in an overarching system for NDR • Inter-linkage of MILAC regional projects
