  1. Agenda • Check 3-1 homework • 3-2 Notes • Assignment

  2. 3-1 homework check

  3. 3-1 homework check

  4. Homework Quiz 3-1 • You may use a calculator • Please put your notes and homework away • Do warm-up for 3-2 in note packet

  5. Warm Up 3-2 Write as an algebraic statement: 4 less than twice a number is 13 2 more than y cubed is y squared

  6. Vocabulary Solve an equation to find all the values of a variable that make the equation a true statement

  7. Solve equations using addition and subtraction Lesson 3-2 Objective:

  8. To solvex + a = b and x - a = bequations: Perform the opposite operation in reverse order: Ask: What is happening to x? EXAMPLE 1: The opposite of 24 is -24. Add that to both sides x + 24 = 52 -24 -24 Add: 52 + (-24) x = 28

  9. Try a few more… EXAMPLE 2: The opposite of 7 is -7. Add that to both sides x + 7 = -11 -7 -7 Add: -11 + (-7) -18 x =

  10. Next one… EXAMPLE 3: The opposite of -5 is 5. Add that to both sides -12 = x + (-5) +5 +5 Add: -12 + 5 -7 x =

  11. 1 4 7 9 9 3 4 4 - - 9 9 One more… EXAMPLE 4: The opposite of 4/9 is -4/9. Add that to both sides + x = Add: 7/9 + (-4/9). x Notice we already have common denominators. = Just add the numerators!

  12. To solvex - a = bequations: Change it to x + -a = b Then solve like all the others! EXAMPLE 5: x – 12 = -7 Rewrite with addition. They mean the same! x + (-12) = -7 Add 12 to both sides. +12 +12 Add: -7 + 12 x = 5

  13. Try some more! EXAMPLE 6: x – (-6) = 2 Subtracting -6 is the same as adding 6 x + 6 = 2 -6 -6 Add -6 to both sides. x = -4 Add: 2 + (-6)

  14. 3 1 1 3 2 2 8 8 1 1 + + 2 2 Another one… EXAMPLE 7: = x – Change to addition first. = x + - The opposite of -1/2 is 1/2. Add that to both sides Add: 3/8 + 1/2 WAIT! We don’t have common denominators this time!

  15. 7 1 3 7 3 4 8 8 8 8 2 8 continued… Remember how to make common denominators?? x 4 + x 4 + = So…. x =

  16. Check for Understanding
