  1. Hardware and Software Key Loggers Hardware key logger is a tiny (about 2 inches) plug-in device that records every keystroke typed on any computer, regardless of operating system. It is capable of storing about 2,000,000 key strokes with 128-bit encryption. Hardware key logger is impossible to discover with software key logging scanners and it can be purchased online for as little as $39. Software key loggers are clandestine applications that record every keystroke on a computer. There are many free and commercial versions of the application, readily available for any operating system configuration. Hardware key logger can be slipped on and off the keyboard of a computer when an employee is out of the office, or hacker can pretend to be a repair person. Installing a hardware keystroke logger on a computer takes less than a minute. Software key logger can be delivered as an attachment within an e-mail. Software keystroke logging applications can be detected by an anti-virus application, such as Norton or MacAfee. Hardware key loggers can only be detected with physical inspection of the machine.
